Fostering The Spirit

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Fostering the spirit was the last thing I was thinking about as I sat at my computer. I had been working for a few hours and thought I really should stay at it for a while and get my newsletter done. Problem was, part of me yearned to go outside. It was a beautiful morning and I hadn’t been out to enjoy it yet and I wanted to.

Nonetheless, the part that was ‘should-ing’ me was giving me it’s opinion very loudly.

I went outside anyway. Why? Because I’ve learned that fostering the spirit is vital for happiness.

Is Fostering the Spirit Selfish?

As I was walking, the loveliness of the day breezed through me and I thought how good it was that I’d left my desk. As a child, I’d often been told that doing things that made me feel good was selfish. Perhaps it was–in childhood most of us are awfully self-centered.

Unfortunately, that belief got installed as a truth, a truth I have to challenge from time to time. One of the ways I do that is by differentiating between doing things that are me-centered, as in the personality of me and doing things that are soul centered.

When I do something from ‘me’-centeredness, I’m usually focussed on some sort of outcome that I believe is important (rightly or wrongly).Even if I get what I believe I want or need, there is usually a resulting feeling of constriction and/or smallness. However, when I put my soul first, I feel large, expansive and what results are feelings of wanting to give more.

For example, if I’d stayed at my desk, I would have attended to my worldly ‘me’ goal and gotten my newsletter done, but I would have felt tense. As it was, I honoured my beingness and went outside. I noticed right away how my energy went up and I felt really good and then wanted to write a really great newsletter rather than just get it done)

What Happens When We Aren’t Fostering The Spirit!

When we fail in fostering the spirit, we often resort to other behaviours that we think will make us happy: we buy stuff, work at getting acclaim, etc, but often happiness still does not come. How can it? Happiness IS the result of attunement to who we really are. That means listening to ourselves at a really deep level and then doing everything we can to live a life that is aligned with that attunement. When you are fostering the spirit in that way, true happiness just flows.

Fostering the Spirit Creates Happiness!

I like to encourage you to foster YOUR spirit. You can tell that you’re doing it when you feel light, airy and expansive. You’re not needy of other things to happen. When you hit the bull’s eye like this and meet a ‘core’ need, your soul will simply smile And nothing else will need to happen!

And speaking of core needs, I want to tell you about a resource for your health and well-being. A colleague of mine, Rachel Assuncao, has developed a 14 day e-course that’s designed to help you make simple and manageable changes to improve your health.  I’ve just done it myself and loved it. Although some of the material was familiar, the repetition was good and some of the material was new to me. I really liked that.

The course, called 14 Days to a Healthier New You, offers a daily practical tip or recipe to help you improve your health and wellbeing. The course is free and I highly recommend it.

Communication Skills

Top communication skills: Taking 100% responsibility for your relationships!

When I help people with their relationships, I try to upgrade their communication skills. One of the best ways I know to do that is to help them stop pointing their finger at someone else (even if that someone else deserves it) and to take more responsibility for how the relationship is going themselves.

If I hear a conversation that goes like this: “He/She should….” Or, “He/she never . . . ” I know their index finger is straight as an arrow and targeted at the bull’s eye of the other person. That means that person’s communication skills are probably low.

Not Taking Responsibility shows a lock of communication skills:

When people don’t show communications skills like taking full responsibility, it’s often because they feel frustrated and powerless. If we make the other person the problem, we feel better. But it’s counterproductive. The only person we can change in a relationship is ourselves.  So, how about we set about doing that: changing ourselves.

What Communication Skills like Taking 100% Responsibility Looks Like:

What that means is that if we want there to be more kindness in the relationship, we crank up our own kindness to 100%. If we want there to be more communication skills, we take 100% for creating communicating skills ourselves. Whatever we want in the relationship, we take full responsibility for creating!

First of all, that puts what we want in the field, which is great. Secondly, it stimulates our partners to reciprocate. And lastly, it just feels good to both parties.

Here’s a lovely video on this concept by a company called Simple Truths. It’s short and sweet! Enjoy.

Busyness!

The Badge of Busyness

Below is a poem about Busyness by coach, Christine Arylo. Although the poem is for women, both genders fall under the whip of the task-master’s ‘To Do’ list. Don’t get me wrong, it’s important to get things done, but it’s also important not to. In other words, we need to keep a balance between the part of us that wants to DO and the part of us that wants to BE!

That’s why at the top of my page in the morning, ABOVE my ‘To Do’ list is my ‘To Be’ list. Yes, I want to get things done, but I am old enough and wise enough to know that the ‘To Do’ list is endless and that accomplishing what’s on it may feel good, but it’s not the kind of deep, soulful feeling good that I choose to make my life about. Also, it reminds me that even when I’m attending to my ‘To Do’ list, I can do it in a way that honours my beingness. In other words, I can get things done without busyness. Busyness presumes preoccupation and I can’t experience life fully when I’m preoccupied.

Beingness versus Busyness:

What feels good, good deep down, is when I move through my days with certain beingness qualities. For me, one of the most important ones is ‘being spacious’. When I am being spacious, I give myself time, give myself room, the room to experience the juiciness of the world and not miss it. When I do this, I usually find myself taking a deep breath and noticing the exquisite beauty of something in the world around me. Often I feel an immediate sense of happiness. I am out of my head and out of the contraction that busyness likes to create and into the present moment, which is the only place I can truly experience life. And, even if I carry on with my To Do list, I can do it with a sense of spaciousness. That, to me, is mastery!

Here’s the poem.

We Burn Our Badges of Busyness:

What are we teaching our girls?

You can be anything.
You can do anything.
You can have anything.

Now get going.

There is much to do.
So much that you will never feel like you’ve done it all.

Allow me to introduce you to your new lifetime companion
Her name is “To-Do List”

She will follow you everywhere from now on
She will be there to greet you when you wake
She will hang out near you all day long
And she will be there when you lay your head down to rest
Making sure that you don’t forget her, even as you try to sleep

You will learn to wear her as a badge of honor
This flashing symbol of busy-ness
She thrives on attention,
lives for compliments,
She seeks out acknowledgments of her busyness,
and ability to ‘get it all done’
without a sweat, and with a smile

She is not stingy
She loves to share accolades with her sister super women
Swooning and commenting on their multi-tasking feats
As if their doingness was the latest, most fabulous, all-the-rage hat

Some days you will be tired
And will want to set down the to dos
Take a break from your badge,
Whose weight you notice has become quiet heavy

You will try to unpin it
Pull it, tear it, yank it,
But no matter how hard you try
Your badge of busyness
Will not budge

Your to-do list
Doesn’t take kindly to being set down
Or Forgotten
She is fiercely intent on
Staying alive
Remaining on center stage
Where she can always be seen

What they (we) didn’t tell you
When you accepted your to-do list as a rite of passage
And fashioned on your badge with pride
Was that try as you might
When you tire
No matter how hard you try
You can’t hide
You can’t run
You can’t even pin that relentless list on some other unsuspecting soul

But YOU can choose

Girl, woman, sister
You have a choice to NEVER pick up
This badge of busyness
You have the choice to walk away and NEVER look back
Not because you stop doing and achieving
Which I know is one of your (my) greatest, unspoken fears
But because you know that you don’t need a
Badge of busyness or a never-ending list of to-dos
To prove your worth

Stand tall
Turn on your heel now
Do not follow us
A generation of women who unknowningly ran down the aisle
To marry busy-ness
And ended up with a sense of self
Tied to ‘what I’ve accomplished and gotten done in a day”

Turn away
Run away
And change your sense of self
for the good
of us all

As you turn away
We will burn our badges
And together we will change
The decree of women forever

“Yes I can do anything.”
“Yes I can be anything.”
“Yes I can have anything.”

BUT NO … I DON’T NEED TO DO BE AND HAVE EVERYTHING

I am valuable simply because I am
Even if I never pick up another to do
Even when I am doing nothing
Especially when I am just being
I am worthy

Because I know the truth

I am enough
Simply because I am

And so are you.

Mother.
Sister.
Daughter.
Woman.

Being Happy About My Book Being Done~!

My apologies for the lack of newsletters lately. I’ve been engrossed in getting a novel to the publishers. It’s now IN!!!! Done! It’ll be out in November! I’ll post more about it closer to the time!

Being Happy and Having Stuff!

I love that our culture is starting to study happiness now and is ‘getting’ that happiness doesn’t result from having stuff. Otherwise, why would the U.S. top the list of countries most suffering from depression? (According to a 2004 study done by the World Health Organization that rated 14 countries.)

Happiness doesn’t result from accomplishing stuff either. The suicides of hugely successful people have woken us up to this fairy tale and have shown us what Jon Kabat-Zinn, the meditation teacher points out, “wherever you go, there you are”.

Irritations That Block Being Happy!

But meanwhile, ‘issues’–things we don’t like or find irritating continue to occur. How to deal with them so you can experience being happy anyway? Here are some tips!

Decide not to be a pinball machine, just reacting to the button-pushing events. Asserting that you have power and choice is HUGE!

Recognize that you can choose being happy anyway. You may not think you have a choice, but just asserting that you do will get you searching for new and different ways of responding.

Let go of any resistance to the fact that an ‘issue’ is there. As Byron Katie says, “When you argue with reality you only lose 100% of the time!”

Now for a special technique. See if you can find ‘space’ for what’s irritating. To do that, you have to become bigger, more expansive. A little visualization will help. Imagine yourself as a huge ocean and see the irritation as a small bit of rubbish floating within it. See it, but within a bigger vastness of Who You Are!

A Meditation for Being Happy!

Here’s a meditation that will help you do that. It’s one I’ve made myself. Check it out. Click HERE to get it. The meditation will help you create the conditions for being happy ‘anyway’–which is a powerful skill to have. Especially in these tsunami-like times!

If you like this meditation and want to explore other techniques for modulating your energy, click on -Change Your Energy, Change Your Life which is a 40-day online course you can try out the first week at no charge to see if you like it!

ENERGY!!!

ENERGY is our most precious commodity.

When we have energy and that energy is positive and

lush and lively, we can do almost anything. We can even

overcome problems more easily!

When we don’t have energy, or that energy is slow and/or

negative, we really can’t do much.

Change Your Energy and Change Your Life!

In all my 30 years of coaching, helping people to change their

energy is really what I do. I use a lot of different techniques and I’ve

been putting them together into a course I’ll tell you more about

next week. (It’s a 40-day online course with audios,videos,

meditations, visualizations, tapping procedures & MORE for changing

energy.)

Changing Energy

Let me share a really simple tool for modulating your energy right

now. But first, pick a number between 1 and 10 that describes where

your energy is before you do it, then check again after so you can

test the change. I’m asking you to do this because this particular

exercise is simple. yet is will expand the state of your energy field

and make it more positive.

To try it, click the link HERE

I’ll tell you more next week!

CHANGE YOUR ENERGY, CHANGE YOUR LIFE!

Exciting news! I have just finished creating a 40-day online course called Change Your Energy, Change Your Life! which is full of tools to help you change your energy from negative to positive, from tired and discouraged to energized and optimistic at will.

Each ‘lesson’ (about 5-10 minutes) contains some coaching, and an audio, or video with an easy to learn technique or meditation or tool to help you change your energy. The lessons are sometimes pithy, sometimes funny and always inspiring.

This course represents the best of all I know so far in my 30 years of coaching.  Check it out HERE

Mastering Energy Modulation is the Ultimate Skill!

To me, the ULTIMATE freedom is being able to modulate your own energy from moment to moment! It’s powerful stuff! This allows you to be ‘happy anyway’! Even when life is throwing tough stuff at you, you can still feel good.

I’m gifting the first week F*R*E*E so you can test it out and see if it’s for you. If it isn’t and you don’t opt-in for more, no more emails will come to you. If you do decide to go for the full 40 days, the cost is $29.oo

Energy Is Everything!

If you want to be more in charge of how you feel, no matter what else is going on in your world, this course may be for you! Energy is EVERYTHING. It’s what you build your life with, it’s what attracts people and situations to you. Learn to create the energy YOU want! Here’s the link, once more. CHANGE YOUR ENERGY COURSE

Possibility Thinking

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Here is a short video on Possibility Thinking:

Switching to Possibility Thinking:

Stories like this are inspiring. They get us to switch from impossibility thinking to possibility thinking. Here are some ways to do that yourself.

Ask yourself these questions:

What IS working?

What, even in the smallest way, is GOOD about this?

How would a Possibility Thinker handle this situation?

Possibility Thinking is Powerful!

As you can see, we can learn Possibility Thinking. It just takes practice. But it’s SO worth it, because our moods and actions usually follow thought. Possibility Thinking is a POWERFUL thing to do!!

Inner Peace

Posted by: | Comments (1)

Inner Peace:

With the holiday season coming up, it’s time to set your course for Inner Peace. To me, this is such a special time of year, but we often miss it because we get eaten up by the Grinchs of busyness and buying.

BUT–it doesn’t have to be that way. YOU get to decide. You get to choose how you feel. Decide to invite Inner Peace into your heart and mind this holiday season.

The ‘Symptoms’ of Inner Peace:

You’ll know you’re on track if you notice any of the following ‘symptoms’.

  • A tendency to think & act spontaneously (rather than from fears based on past experience).
  • An unmistakable ability to enjoy each moment.
  • Loss of interest in judging yourself or anyone else.
  • Loss of interest in conflict.
  • Disinclination to worry (this is a very serious symptom).
  • Frequent overwhelming episodes of appreciation.
  • Connected feelings of connectedness with others & nature.
  • Frequent attacks of smiling through the eyes of the heart
  • Increasing susceptibility to extend love to others.
  • Increasing tendency to let things happen rather
    than make them happen.

To keep these ‘symptoms alive and well:

  • hang out with children.
  • give in any and every way.
  • listen to the promptings of your heart.
  • appreciate often and for no reason.
  • LOVE ANYWAY!

You CAN have the holiday experience you long for. Decide now! Inner Peace is an inside job!

Note: I just heard from a woman named Saskia Davis, the author or ‘Symptoms Of Inner Peace”. When I first saw this article, it was just floating around the Internet and didn’t have an author attribution. Now that I know who actually wrote it, I want to say a big Thanks to Saskia and refer people to her website which can be reached by clicking here:

Energy Depletion

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Here’s a conversation that exemplifies energy depletion:

I was listening to someone the other day tell me how awful their job was. And how she suffered from energy depletion. She went on and on (and on) about how terrible her job was.

So I asked her. “What’s good about it?”

“Nothing!”  she asserted.

“Does it pay you?” I asked.

“Of course!”

“Do you like getting that pay?”

She could tell I was going somewhere with my questioning and gave me a suspicious look.

“Yeah, I like the pay.”

“How about benefits? Does it give you benefits?”

She gave me a begrudging nod.

“Bet you could come up with 5 more things you like about your job too, if you worked at it.”

“Why would I bother doing that?”  she asked.

That led to a longer conversation and the acquisition of a new client, which was great. But, basically, what I told her was this: the brain is predisposed to look for what doesn’t work. That was necessary in the jungle in order to anticipate problems.

How To Avoid Energy Depletion

Nowadays, however, having energy is our most important commodity. Looking for what works gives us energy. Focusing on what isn’t working is a sure recipe for energy depletion.

So if you want a great way to top up your energy, flip the game board on something you’ve been negative about and actively LOOK for what you like. This has the power to flip any energy depletion you may be suffering from. And changing your energy will make you feel powerful and in charge.

Try it. Having energy is crucial to creating your life, especially your BEST LIFE. Learning to change the habits of energy depletion is something we all can do, just by changing our focus!
